15 Small Changes That Made My Home Feel Fresh

I’ve always believed that our surroundings greatly influence our mood, productivity, and overall wellbeing. And yet, I’ve also found that the idea of rejuvenating a living space can be overwhelming and costly. But believe it or not, small changes can create a big impact. This is why I’ve come up with a list of 15 small changes that I personally used to make my home feel fresh and vibrant. They are all simple, cost-effective, and above all, enjoyable.

1. Declutter Regularly

One of the simplest and most effective ways to freshen up your home is to declutter. It’s amazing how much stuff we accumulate over time that we don’t really need. Not only does decluttering create more physical space in your home, but it also clears mental space and brings a sense of calm.

Start by decluttering one room at a time. You might be surprised at how many items you find that you no longer use or need. Remember, the aim isn’t to create a completely minimalist home (unless that’s what you want), but to create a space that feels breathable and uncluttered.

2. Introduce Plants

Plants can instantly make a space feel more vibrant and alive. They not only act as a beautiful decorative element but also improve air quality and add a touch of serenity to your home. I have found that having plants in my living space reduces stress and boosts my mood.

You don’t need a green thumb to keep plants alive. There are many varieties that require minimal care, such as snake plants, ZZ plants, or succulents. If you’re worried about forgetting to water them, consider getting a self-watering planter to ensure they get the hydration they need.

3. Experiment with Lighting

Lighting can make or break a room. It sets the mood and can greatly influence the perceived size of the space. I’ve found that the best approach is to layer lighting, combining ambient, task, and accent lighting.

Experiment with different types of light fixtures and bulbs. Floor and table lamps can add warmth and coziness, while pendant lights or chandeliers can make a statement and become a focal point in the room. Remember, it’s not just about the fixture but also the type of light it emits. The temperature and intensity of the light can dramatically shift the mood of a room.

4. Add Fresh Flowers

Adding fresh flowers to your home is a simple and inexpensive way to uplift your space. They bring in a touch of nature, add color, and make your home smell lovely. I make it a habit to pick up a small bouquet during my weekly grocery shopping.

Display them in a vase on your dining table, coffee table, or kitchen counter. You can stick to one type of flower for a simple, chic look, or mix and match different flowers for a more vibrant, eclectic arrangement. Just remember to change the water regularly to keep the flowers fresh longer.

5. Play with Scent

Our sense of smell is strongly linked to our emotions and memories. By introducing new scents into your home, you can create different moods and experiences. I love using essential oil diffusers and scented candles to create a relaxing and inviting atmosphere.

Try different scents for different rooms or seasons. For example, you might want a calming lavender scent for your bedroom, a refreshing citrus scent for your living room, and a comforting vanilla scent for the colder months. Remember, it’s all about creating an environment that makes you feel good.

6. Rearrange Furniture

Sometimes, all your space needs is a new perspective, and rearranging furniture can do just that. Moving around your sofa, chairs, or bed can dramatically change the look and feel of a room. It’s a fun and cost-effective way to refresh your space.

Before you start moving things around, consider the flow of the room. You want to create a layout that facilitates movement and conversation. Also, take into account the natural light in the room. Sometimes, simply moving a chair closer to a window can make a big difference.

7. Update Your Artwork

Artwork is a wonderful way to express your personality and bring life to your walls. But, just like any other aspect of your home, it can benefit from an update from time to time. This doesn’t mean you have to buy new art; you can simply move pieces around or even create your own.

Try switching the artwork from one room to another. The piece that’s been in your living room for years might look fresh and new in your bedroom. Or, get creative and make your own artwork. It can be as simple as a framed piece of fabric, a collage of photos, or a painting.

8. Invest in a New Rug

A rug can tie a room together, add warmth and texture, and even make a bold statement. If your current rug has seen better days or no longer fits your style, consider investing in a new one.

Choose a rug that complements your existing furniture and color scheme. Don’t be afraid to go for bold patterns or colors if your room is mostly neutral. Remember, a rug isn’t just for your living room. It can also bring interest and comfort to your kitchen, dining room, or bedroom.

9. Refresh Your Bedding

Your bed is likely the largest piece of furniture in your bedroom, so changing up your bedding can have a big impact. Plus, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of fresh, new sheets.

Consider investing in bedding in a new color or pattern. You can also add a throw blanket or decorative pillows for extra texture and interest. Remember, your bedding isn’t just for looks; it should also feel comfortable and inviting.

10. Paint a Wall

Painting a wall is a bit more involved than some of the other changes on this list, but it’s still a relatively small project that can have a big impact. A new color can completely transform a room.

You can paint all the walls in a room, or just one as an accent. If you’re not ready to commit to a bold color, consider a neutral shade with a different undertone than your current color. Or, go for a trendy wallpaper. There are many removable options available now that make it easy to change up your walls whenever you want.

11. Update Your Hardware

Updating the hardware in your home can make a big difference. Think door knobs, cabinet handles, and light switch plates. These small details can add up to a big change in the look and feel of your space.

You can find a wide variety of hardware styles and finishes online or at your local home improvement store. Look for something that complements the style of your home. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different styles and finishes for an eclectic look.

12. Add a Mirror

A mirror can make a room feel larger and brighter by reflecting light. Plus, it can act as a decorative element. Consider adding a mirror in your living room, hallway, or bedroom.

When choosing a mirror, consider its shape and frame. A round or oval mirror can soften a room with many straight lines, while a mirror with an ornate frame can add a touch of elegance.

13. Use Baskets for Storage

Baskets are a great way to add storage to your home while also adding texture and interest. They can hold blankets, toys, books, and more, while keeping your space looking neat and organized.

Consider using baskets in different sizes, shapes, and materials. A large, round wicker basket can hold throw blankets in your living room, while small, fabric baskets can organize your bathroom essentials.

14. Add a Pop of Color

Adding a pop of color to your home can instantly make it feel more vibrant and lively. This can be achieved through a piece of furniture, a rug, curtains, or even a throw pillow.

Don’t be afraid to go bold with your color choice. A bright, bold color can add a sense of fun and energy to your space. Just remember to balance it out with more neutral colors to avoid overwhelming the space.

15. Create a Gallery Wall

A gallery wall is a great way to display your favorite photos, artwork, and mementos. It adds personality and interest to your space, and it’s a project you can do in a day.

Start by choosing a wall in your home that needs some love. Then, gather your favorite pieces and lay them out on the floor to come up with a layout. Mix different sizes, shapes, and types of art for an eclectic look, or stick to a more uniform look for a clean, modern vibe. Once you’re happy with your layout, start hanging your pieces on the wall.

There you have it! 15 small changes that can make your home feel fresh and new. I hope you find these tips helpful and inspiring. Remember, the goal isn’t to create a perfect home, but a home that feels perfect to you. So have fun with it, and make it your own.
