15 Ways I Made My Deck Feel Like an Oasis

As we continue to spend more time in our homes, creating a beautiful and relaxing outdoor space has become more important than ever. Our decks can serve as a peaceful oasis, offering an escape from the demands of our busy lives. With a few thoughtful adjustments and additions, you can transform your deck into a tranquil haven, perfect for unwinding or entertaining. In this post, I’ll share 15 ways I made my own deck feel like an oasis, and hopefully inspire you to do the same.

1. Comfortable Seating

When designing an outdoor space, comfort is key. Start by investing in quality, weather-resistant furniture that can withstand the elements. I chose a deep-seated sofa and a pair of matching armchairs for my deck. They not only look great but also provide a cozy place to lounge and enjoy the outdoors.

Consider the functionality of your space when picking out furniture. Do you plan to host dinners or enjoy quiet mornings with a cup of coffee? Your furniture should cater to these activities. For instance, I added a small bistro table and chairs to create a breakfast nook, perfect for enjoying the morning sun.

2. Outdoor Rugs

Rugs can really tie an outdoor space together. They add a touch of warmth and color while also defining different areas on your deck. I chose a large outdoor rug with a vibrant pattern to anchor my seating area. It immediately added a feeling of coziness and visual interest.

When shopping for outdoor rugs, opt for materials that are durable and easy to clean such as polypropylene. These rugs are designed to withstand the elements and can easily be hosed off when they get dirty. Consider the size and color of the rug carefully. Bigger rugs can make your space feel more expansive, while bold patterns or colors can add a fun, whimsical touch.

3. Plants and Flowers

Plants and flowers are a surefire way to bring life and color to your deck. I filled my space with a mix of potted plants, hanging baskets, and window boxes. The greenery provides a beautiful contrast to the wooden deck and makes the space feel lush and inviting.

Choose a variety of plants in different sizes and shapes to create visual interest. For my deck, I picked a combination of ferns, succulents, and flowering plants. Ferns are great for adding texture, succulents are low-maintenance and hardy, and flowering plants bring a pop of color. Remember to consider the amount of sunlight your deck receives when choosing plants, as some need more light than others.

4. Throw Pillows and Blankets

Throw pillows and blankets can instantly make your deck feel more homey. I chose pillows in a variety of sizes, patterns, and colors to add personality to my seating area. The blankets are perfect for chilly evenings when I want to stay outside a bit longer.

When selecting outdoor pillows and blankets, consider materials that are weather-resistant and easy to clean. I opted for pillows made of Sunbrella fabric, known for its durability and resistance to fading. The blankets are made of a thick, machine-washable material, perfect for outdoor use.

5. Lighting

Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood for your outdoor oasis. I installed a combination of string lights, lanterns, and solar-powered path lights for my deck. The string lights create a magical, twinkling effect after sunset, the lanterns provide ambient light, and the path lights ensure safety when moving around the deck in the dark.

There are numerous lighting options available, ranging from solar-powered lights to electric ones, so consider your needs and choose accordingly. I opted for solar-powered lights for their eco-friendliness and ease of installation. The string lights are LED, energy-efficient and have a warm, yellow glow that creates a cozy ambiance.

6. Shade Solutions

Providing shade on your deck is essential, especially during the hot summer months. I installed a retractable awning for my deck which provides shade when needed and can be retracted when not in use. On particularly hot days, it helps keep the deck cooler and makes it more comfortable to use.

There are plenty of shade solutions available, from umbrellas to shade sails, pergolas, and gazebos. Choose one that suits your space and needs. I chose a retractable awning because it provides flexibility and also enhances the aesthetic appeal of my deck.

7. Outdoor Art

Art isn’t just for your indoor walls. I added a large outdoor mural on one wall of my deck, and it immediately became a conversation piece. The mural adds color and interest to my outdoor space and reflects my personal style.

When choosing art for your outdoor space, consider the weather conditions it will be exposed to. Materials like metal, stone, or weather-resistant canvas are great choices. You could also consider sculptures or garden stakes to add a touch of whimsy to your space.

8. Water Features

A water feature can add a soothing, tranquil element to your deck. I added a small tabletop fountain to my deck, and the sound of trickling water immediately made the space feel more serene.

When choosing a water feature, consider the size of your space and the maintenance involved. Smaller features like tabletop fountains or bird baths are low-maintenance and perfect for smaller spaces. If you have a larger space, you might consider a larger fountain or even a pond.

9. Fire Pit

A fire pit can be a wonderful addition to your deck. It provides warmth on chilly evenings and creates a cozy, inviting atmosphere. I added a gas fire pit to my deck, and it has become a favorite spot for roasting marshmallows and enjoying late-night conversations.

When choosing a fire pit, consider safety first. It should be placed away from any structures or overhanging trees. Also consider the type of fire pit that suits your needs best. I chose a gas fire pit for its ease of use and cleanliness, but there are also wood-burning options available.

10. Privacy Screens

Privacy screens can make your deck feel more secluded and intimate. I added a few lattice screens around my deck, and they not only provide privacy but also serve as a backdrop for climbing plants.

When choosing privacy screens, consider the style that matches your home and deck. Materials can range from wood to metal, bamboo, or even fabric. I chose lattice screens because they provide privacy without completely blocking light and air.

11. Outdoor Kitchen

If you love cooking and entertaining, an outdoor kitchen can be a great addition to your deck. I added a small kitchen area with a built-in grill and prep counter, and it’s been a game-changer for outdoor parties and family meals.

When designing an outdoor kitchen, consider your cooking habits and needs. Even a simple grill with a prep area can greatly enhance your outdoor cooking experience. If you have more space and budget, you might consider adding a sink, refrigerator, or even a pizza oven.

12. Bird Feeders

Bird feeders can attract a variety of birds to your deck, adding life and color. I added a few hanging feeders and a bird bath, and it’s been a delight to watch different species of birds visit.

When choosing bird feeders, consider the types of birds you want to attract. Different feeders and food will attract different species. Also, ensure the feeders are placed safely, away from places where cats or other predators could reach.

13. Swing or Hammock

A swing or hammock can add a fun and relaxing element to your deck. I added a hammock between two posts, and it’s the perfect spot for reading or taking a nap.

When installing a swing or hammock, ensure it’s securely attached and safe to use. Consider the weight capacity and ensure it’s installed in a place where there’s enough space for it to swing or sway.

14. Outdoor Speakers

Music can greatly enhance the atmosphere of your outdoor space. I installed a pair of weatherproof speakers on my deck, and they provide great sound for parties or relaxing evenings.

When choosing outdoor speakers, consider their placement for the best sound coverage. Also, ensure they’re weatherproof or weather-resistant to withstand the elements.

Lastly, add personal touches to make your deck truly feel like your own oasis. I added a few of my favorite items, like a vintage metal sign and a handmade wind chime. These personal touches make the space feel unique and inviting.

When adding personal touches, think about items that reflect your personality and style. It could be anything from a favorite plant or flowers to unique outdoor decor or artwork. The idea is to create a space that feels truly yours.

So, these are the 15 ways I transformed my deck into a relaxing oasis. I hope these tips inspire you to create your own outdoor haven. Remember, it’s all about creating a space that reflects your style and caters to your needs. Happy decorating!
