14 Things I Wish I’d Never Painted White

Many of us, myself included, have fallen into the trap of painting everything white in an effort to create that sleek, minimalistic style that is so often featured in glossy magazines.

But if I could go back in time, there are several items in my home that I would have left in their original color. Trust me, not everything looks great in white. Here are 14 things I wish I’d never painted white and why they were a mistake.

1. The Old Brick Fireplace

This was a major mistake. I painted over the rich, warm-colored bricks with a bright, stark white. At first, I loved the transformation. But over time, I realized I had stripped away the character and charm of the original bricks.

The white paint made the fireplace look cold and sterile, rather than warm and inviting. Plus, the paint highlighted every little imperfection and made the soot and ash stand out even more. And once you paint brick, it’s nearly impossible to remove the paint and return it to its original state. So, if you have an old brick fireplace, I would recommend leaving it in its natural state or choosing a non-white paint color that still highlights its natural beauty.

2. Antique Wooden Furniture

In an effort to modernize my home, I took to painting several pieces of antique wooden furniture white. The thought was to give them a fresh, updated look. However, in doing so, I completely ruined their natural beauty and charm.

The white paint covered up the unique grain patterns and age marks that added character to these pieces. And worse yet, the paint began to chip and peel over time, revealing the beautiful wood underneath, making me regret my decision even more. So, if you’re thinking about painting antique furniture, consider the long-term effects and the potential value you could be destroying.

3. The Hardwood Floors

Painting hardwood floors white is a trend that I, unfortunately, fell for. At first, it looked fantastic – light, bright, and contemporary. However, I soon realized the pitfalls of this choice.

White floors show everything – every speck of dust, every scratch, every footmark. It became a constant battle to keep them looking clean and fresh. And unlike a wall, you can’t just wipe away the dirt. It takes serious scrubbing, which in turn wears away the paint. My advice: leave the hardwood floors in their natural state. They’re beautiful as they are and much easier to maintain.

4. The Kitchen Cabinets

Like many, I was drawn to the idea of a bright, white kitchen. I painted the cabinets white, thinking it would make the space feel bigger and cleaner. However, it ended up feeling cold and sterile.

The white cabinets showed every fingerprint and food spill, making it impossible to keep them looking clean. If I could go back, I would choose a warmer color that still brightens up the kitchen but is more forgiving and adds more depth to the room.

The constant touching and handling wear away the paint, leaving it looking shabby and unkempt. My advice: stick to a darker color for banisters. They’ll still look modern, but won’t show the dirt and wear as much.

A white front door can look crisp and inviting. However, it also shows every mark and stain from the outside elements.

Whether it’s dirt, rain stains, or bug marks, a white door will show it all. And because it’s exposed to the elements, it’s not easy to keep it clean and fresh-looking. A colored door, on the other hand, can hide these imperfections and still look inviting and stylish.

7. The Bathroom Walls

In theory, a white bathroom has a clean, spa-like appeal. But in reality, it shows every water stain, soap scum mark, and speck of dust.

Cleaning becomes a constant task, and the bathroom never really looks as clean as it should. A different color or even a patterned wallpaper can hide these marks and make your bathroom feel cleaner and more inviting.

8. The Dining Room Chairs

White dining room chairs looked chic and modern at first. But with regular use, they quickly became stained and dingy.

Spills and stains from food are inevitable, and they show up prominently on white chairs. And because chairs are used so frequently, they’re not easy to keep clean. A darker or patterned fabric is a better choice for dining room chairs. It hides stains and still looks stylish.

9. The Kids’ Bedroom Walls

I thought a white kids’ bedroom would be calming and peaceful. Instead, it became a canvas for crayons, markers, and dirty hands.

White bedroom walls show every mark, smudge, and stain. And kids aren’t known for being tidy and careful. A different color or even a fun, washable wallpaper is a better choice for kids’ bedrooms. It hides the marks and adds some personality to the room.

10. The Laundry Room Cabinets

Laundry rooms are prone to spills and stains from detergents and cleaning products. White cabinets in the laundry room quickly became stained and dirty-looking.

A darker color or a fun pattern would have been a better choice for the laundry room. It hides the stains and adds some interest to a usually boring room.

A white garage door looks fresh and clean at first. But it quickly becomes dirty and dingy from outdoor elements.

A colored door is a better choice for the garage. It hides the dirt and still looks stylish.
