13 Things I Always Look for at Estate Sales

As an avid treasure hunter, I spend many of my weekends exploring estate sales across the city. And over the years, I’ve developed a keen eye for certain items that are often overlooked, yet incredibly valuable. Not only can these items be resold for a profit, but they can add unique charm to your home decor or even provide a sentimental touch if you’re into collecting. In this blog post, I’m going to share the top 13 things I always look for at estate sales. So, whether you’re a seasoned picker or a newbie, there’s something in here for everyone.

1. Vintage Jewelry

Vintage jewelry is often a treasure trove at estate sales. Often, these pieces have been handed down through generations and can be incredibly valuable. They are also often unique and can be a great addition to your jewelry collection.

Check for hallmarks or any signs of age and authenticity. Designer pieces can fetch a good price, but even non-branded items can be valuable if they’re made from precious metals or gemstones. Don’t overlook costume jewelry either; some vintage brands are highly sought after.

2. Old Books

There’s nothing quite like the smell of old books, and they can be a goldmine at estate sales. First editions, signed copies, or books from notable authors can be worth a lot of money.

Don’t worry if you’re not a book expert. There are plenty of apps and websites where you can quickly check a book’s value. Just remember to handle them with care, as condition is key when it comes to reselling old books.

3. Vintage Postcards and Photographs

Vintage postcards and photographs can be highly collectible. They offer a unique glimpse into the past and can be fascinating to look through.

Look for postcards from the early 20th century or earlier, especially those with handwritten messages. Old photographs can also be valuable, particularly if they depict important historical events or figures.

4. Vinyl Records

Vinyl records are back in vogue, and collectors are always on the hunt for rare or classic albums. Even if you’re not a music buff, it’s worth checking out the record collection at an estate sale.

Don’t be put off by a little dust or grime, as these can often be cleaned. However, do check for any scratches that could affect the sound quality. The most valuable records are usually those that are in good condition and have their original cover and inserts.

5. Antique Furniture

Antique furniture can be a great find at estate sales. Not only can it add a touch of vintage charm to your home, but certain pieces can also be quite valuable.

Look for items made from solid wood, with original features and in good condition. Signs of age and wear can actually enhance the value of antique furniture, providing it’s not too damaged.

6. Vintage Toys and Games

Vintage toys and games can be incredibly collectible. They’re also a lot of fun to look for, as you never know what you might come across.

Look for toys from the 1980s and earlier, particularly those that are still in their original packaging. Board games can also be valuable, especially if they’re complete and in good condition.

7. Artwork

Artwork is always worth checking out at estate sales. You never know, you might just stumble upon a hidden masterpiece!

Look for original pieces, rather than prints or reproductions. Even if you’re not familiar with the artist, it’s worth doing a quick online search to check their work’s value. Remember, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so even if it’s not particularly valuable, if you love it, it’s worth buying.

8. Kitchenware
