12 Things I Stopped Doing That Made My Afternoons Calmer

The pace of modern life can often leave us feeling rushed and stressed, particularly in the afternoons when the day’s demands are at their peak. But what if I told you that it is possible to create calmer, more peaceful afternoons, simply by changing a few daily habits?

You might think it’s a tall order, but I’ve discovered that by eliminating certain activities, I’ve been able to reclaim my afternoons and transform them into a time of tranquility and productivity. I’m excited to share these twelve things I stopped doing that have made my afternoons calmer, and I hope they can do the same for you.

1. Skipping Lunch

I used to power through the day, often skipping lunch to get more done. But I found this only left me feeling depleted and cranky by mid-afternoon. Now, I make sure to take a proper lunch break, even if it’s just a quick sandwich. Eating a nutritious meal in the middle of the day has significantly improved my energy levels and mood.

Having a lunch break isn’t just about the food though; it’s about taking a mental break as well. Stepping away from work, even for just 30 minutes, can greatly increase productivity and decrease stress. It’s a simple change, but one that has made my afternoons much more manageable.

2. Multitasking

I used to pride myself on being a multitasker. I thought juggling multiple tasks at once was a sign of efficiency. However, studies have shown that multitasking can actually decrease productivity and increase stress levels.

I’ve found that by focusing on one task at a time, I’m able to complete my work more efficiently and with less stress. I no longer feel overwhelmed by my to-do list. Instead, I tackle one task at a time, fully investing my attention and energy into it before moving on to the next. This single-tasking approach has transformed my afternoons from a frantic scramble into a calm, productive period of my day.

3. Neglecting Self-Care

In the hustle and bustle of the day, it’s easy to neglect self-care. But I’ve learned that taking care of myself isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. I used to push through the afternoon, ignoring signs of fatigue or stress. Now, I make sure to listen to my body and take short breaks when needed.

This might mean taking a quick walk around the block, doing a few stretches, or even just closing my eyes for five minutes. These small acts of self-care have a big impact on my afternoon, helping me to stay focused and energized. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup. Taking care of yourself is essential for maintaining calm and productivity throughout the day.

4. Checking Social Media

Social media is a great way to stay connected, but it can also be a major source of distraction and stress. I used to check my social media accounts multiple times throughout the day, only to find myself getting sucked into a vortex of news, updates, and comments.

Now, I limit my social media usage to specific times of the day, outside of my working hours. This has freed up a lot of time and mental energy, allowing me to focus more on my work and less on what’s happening online. I’ve also found that by reducing my exposure to social media, I’m less likely to get caught up in the stress and negativity that can often permeate these platforms.

5. Saying Yes to Everything

I used to be a “yes” person, always agreeing to take on more tasks and responsibilities, regardless of my own workload. However, this only led to burnout and stress. I’ve learned that it’s okay to say no, and have started to set boundaries to protect my time and energy.

Now, before I agree to a new task or project, I consider whether it aligns with my priorities and whether I have the capacity to take it on without jeopardizing my wellbeing or other commitments. This has resulted in a more manageable workload and a lot less stress in my afternoons.

6. Ignoring My Environment

I used to pay little attention to my environment, but I’ve come to realize that our surroundings can have a big impact on our mood and productivity. A cluttered, chaotic space can lead to a cluttered, chaotic mind.

Now, I make an effort to keep my workspace clean and organized. I also incorporate elements that make me happy, like plants and pictures of loved ones. This has made a noticeable difference in my afternoons, creating a sense of calm and order that helps me stay focused and productive.

7. Drinking Too Much Caffeine

I used to rely heavily on caffeine to get me through the afternoon slump, but I found this only led to a cycle of energy highs and lows, and disrupted my sleep. Now, I limit my caffeine intake and make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Hydration is key to maintaining energy levels and concentration. So instead of reaching for that extra cup of coffee, try sipping on some water or herbal tea. This small change can make a big difference in your afternoon energy levels.

8. Neglecting Physical Activity

Sitting at a desk all day can lead to stiffness and fatigue. I used to ignore this, pushing through the discomfort. But I’ve learned that incorporating regular physical activity into my day can greatly improve my energy levels and mood.

Now, I make sure to move my body throughout the day, whether it’s a quick stretch break, a walk during lunch, or a workout after work. Physical activity not only boosts your mood and energy, but it can also help to reduce stress, making your afternoons calmer and more enjoyable.

9. Working Non-stop

I used to think that working non-stop was the key to productivity. However, this only led to burnout and decreased efficiency. Now, I make sure to take regular breaks throughout the day to rest and recharge.

Research has shown that taking short breaks can actually improve productivity and creativity. So don’t feel guilty about stepping away from your desk for a few minutes. It’s not wasted time; it’s an investment in your productivity and wellbeing.

10. Procrastinating

Procrastination can lead to a lot of stress and anxiety, particularly in the afternoon when the day is winding down and deadlines are looming. I used to be a chronic procrastinator, but I’ve learned that tackling tasks head-on is a much better approach.

Now, I try to tackle my most challenging tasks in the morning when my energy levels are high. This way, I can spend my afternoons focusing on less demanding tasks, making this period of the day much calmer and less stressful.

11. Eating Unhealthy Snacks

Reaching for sugary snacks in the afternoon can lead to a temporary energy boost, followed by a crash. I used to fall into this trap, but I’ve learned that reaching for healthier options can provide sustained energy and help to keep blood sugar levels stable.

Now, I opt for snacks like nuts, fruits, or yogurt, which provide a good balance of protein, fiber, and healthy fats to keep me satisfied and energized throughout the afternoon.

12. Focusing on the Negative

It’s easy to get caught up in negative thoughts, particularly when things are stressful. I used to let negative thoughts consume me, but I’ve learned that focusing on the positive can have a big impact on my mood and stress levels.

Now, I make an effort to practice gratitude and focus on the positive aspects of my day. This shift in mindset has made a big difference in my afternoons, helping to reduce stress and promote a sense of calm and wellbeing.
