12 Things I Always Do Before Guests Arrive

We all know that feeling: The anticipation, the excitement, and yes, sometimes the stress, of having guests over. You want to make sure your home is a welcoming haven, a place where your friends and family can relax, enjoy themselves, and feel comfortable. And while it’s always a joy to have people over, it can also be a bit overwhelming to get everything ready.

That’s why I’ve put together this list of the 12 things I always do before guests arrive. From the practical to the personal, these tips can help you prepare your home and yourself for any gathering, big or small.

1. Start with a Deep Clean

I always begin my pre-guest routine with a thorough cleaning of my home. It’s not just about appearances, but also about ensuring my guests have a comfortable and pleasant stay. I focus on high-traffic areas: bathrooms, kitchen, and living room. Making sure these places are spotless and smell fresh makes a world of difference.

In the bathroom, I make sure to scrub the shower, clean the toilet, and wipe down the sink and mirror. In the kitchen, I clean the counters, the stove, and the fridge. I also make sure to vacuum, dust, and mop in the living room. It sounds like a lot, but it’s worth it when you see the look of comfort on your guests’ faces.

2. Stock Up on Essentials

Nothing is worse than running out of toilet paper or hand soap when you have guests over. That’s why I always make sure to stock up on these essentials well in advance. This includes items like paper towels, tissues, and even extra toothbrushes for those who might have forgotten theirs.

I also make sure to have plenty of food and drinks on hand. Depending on the occasion, this might mean a full meal or just some snacks and beverages. I try to consider any dietary restrictions my guests might have and provide options for everyone.

3. Set the Mood with Lighting and Music

The right lighting and music can really set the mood for a gathering. I like to use soft, warm lighting to create a cozy atmosphere. I often use candles or fairy lights for an extra touch of magic.

As for music, I choose a playlist that matches the vibe of the event. For a casual get-together, I might go for some chill indie music. For a more formal dinner, I might choose some soft jazz or classical music. Either way, the right music can help your guests relax and enjoy themselves.

4. Prepare the Guest Room

If guests are staying overnight, I make sure the guest room is as inviting as possible. I change the sheets, fluff the pillows, and make sure there are extra blankets in case they get cold. I also leave out fresh towels and a small basket of toiletries in case they forgot anything.

I also try to include a few extra touches to make them feel at home. This might be a vase of fresh flowers, a stack of magazines or books, or a small welcome note. These little gestures can make your guests feel truly welcome and cared for.

5. Do a Quick Clutter Check

Before guests arrive, I do a quick walk-through of my home to check for any clutter. I clear off countertops, put away any stray items, and make sure everything is in its place. This not only makes my home look tidier, but it also helps to create a more relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

I also make sure to clear out any personal items that might be lying around. This includes mail, bills, and any other items that might make guests feel like they’re intruding. The goal is to make them feel like they’re in a home away from home.

6. Plan the Menu

When it comes to food, I believe planning is key. I usually plan the menu a week in advance, taking into account any dietary restrictions or preferences my guests might have. I try to include a variety of options, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

I also make sure to prepare as much as I can in advance. This allows me to spend less time in the kitchen and more time with my guests. I also make sure to have plenty of drinks on hand, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, so everyone can stay hydrated and happy.

7. Set the Table

One of my favorite parts of hosting is setting the table. I love creating a beautiful, inviting tablescape that reflects the occasion. Whether it’s a holiday dinner or a casual brunch, the right table setting can add a touch of elegance and warmth to any gathering.

I usually start by choosing a color scheme or theme. Then, I select the tablecloth, napkins, plates, and glassware to match. I also like to add some decorative elements, like candles, flowers, or a centerpiece, to make the table feel special and festive.

8. Prepare a Welcome Drink

I find that a welcome drink is a great way to kick off any gathering. It sets a festive tone and gives your guests something to enjoy as soon as they arrive. Depending on the occasion, this might be a glass of champagne, a seasonal cocktail, or a non-alcoholic punch.

Having a drink ready also gives you the opportunity to welcome each guest personally. You can take a moment to say hello, offer them a drink, and make them feel comfortable and welcome.

9. Create a Comfortable Atmosphere

I believe that creating a comfortable atmosphere is key to a successful gathering. This includes everything from the temperature of the room to the arrangement of the furniture. I try to make sure the room is neither too hot nor too cold, and I arrange the furniture in a way that encourages conversation and interaction.

I also make sure there are plenty of comfortable seating options available. I bring out extra chairs or cushions if needed, and I make sure there’s plenty of space for everyone to move around freely.

10. Have a Plan for Pets

If you have pets, it’s important to have a plan for them before guests arrive. Some guests may be allergic or uncomfortable around pets, so it’s always a good idea to check in advance. If necessary, I arrange for my pets to stay in a separate room or even with a friend or family member for the day.

I also make sure to clean up any pet hair or messes before guests arrive. I want my guests to feel comfortable and not have to worry about any pet-related issues.

11. Plan Some Entertainment

While good conversation is usually enough entertainment for most gatherings, it’s always a good idea to have some additional options on hand. This could be anything from board games to a great playlist or a fun DIY activity.

I try to choose entertainment that suits the occasion and the guests. For a casual get-together, a selection of board games or a karaoke machine can be a lot of fun. For a more formal dinner, a great playlist or a live musician can add a touch of elegance and sophistication.

12. Take a Moment for Yourself

Finally, before guests arrive, I always take a moment for myself. Hosting can be a lot of work, and it’s important to take a moment to relax and prepare mentally. I usually take a few minutes to sit quietly, enjoy a cup of tea, and reflect on the gathering to come.

Remember, the most important thing about hosting is to enjoy yourself. Your guests are there to spend time with you, so make sure you take the time to enjoy their company and the wonderful gathering you’ve prepared.
