11 Ways I Keep My Kids’ Toys Organized

As a mother of three, I understand the struggle of maintaining a clean and organized home with kids. One of the biggest challenges we face is keeping their toys in order. Imagine stepping on a tiny piece of Lego in the middle of the night or finding a Barbie hairbrush in your cereal bowl!

I’ve spent countless hours discovering systems that keep the toys in check without stifling the kids’ creativity and play. I am eager to share these tips with you, hoping they might help you find some order amidst the beautiful chaos of parenting.

1. Use Clear Storage Bins

Clear storage bins can be a lifesaver when it comes to organizing toys. These transparent boxes allow your kids to see what’s inside without having to rummage through and create a mess. You can label them according to the type of toys they contain, and make clean-up time a breeze.

Clear bins are also stackable, which saves a lot of space. For example, you can have a bin for Legos, another for action figures, and so on. It’s a simple yet effective method to keep your kids’ toys in order.

2. Rotate Toys

This is a strategy I stumbled upon accidentally, and it’s been a game-changer. By rotating toys, I mean keeping only a portion of your child’s toys out for play and storing the rest. After a week or two, you can switch them.

This method not only reduces clutter but also keeps your kids interested in their toys as they get to see “new” ones every few weeks. It’s also a great way to assess which toys your kids are genuinely interested in and which ones can be donated or sold.

3. Utilize Wall Space

Using wall space for storage is a great way to keep toys off the floor. Wall-mounted baskets, shelves, or nets can be used to store stuffed animals, dolls, or action figures.

This approach not only helps in organizing but also adds a decorative element to the room. For example, a net filled with colorful balls or a shelf displaying an array of superhero figurines can add a fun element to the room decor.

4. Install Pegboards

Pegboards are another great way to utilize wall space for toy storage. You can attach hooks, baskets, or small shelves to the board to store different types of toys.

For example, you can hang dress-up clothes, store art supplies in small baskets, or display your child’s car collection on shelves. It’s an adaptable and space-saving storage solution.

5. Use a Toy Box with Compartments

A large toy box may seem like a good idea, but it often turns into a jumble of toys where smaller items get lost. A toy box with compartments can be a better solution.

Assign a specific place for each type of toy. This way, your children will know exactly where to find their favorite toy and where to put it back.

6. Implement the “One In, One Out” Rule

The “One in, One out” rule is a great way to keep the number of toys under control. Every time your child gets a new toy, an old one has to be given away.

This rule will help your child learn about giving and sharing while also preventing your home from being overrun by toys.

7. Create a Toy Library

A toy library is another smart way to manage the number of toys your child has. Just like a book library, your child can borrow a few toys at a time and must return them before getting new ones.

This method keeps the toy count manageable, keeps your child’s interest in the toys, and teaches them responsibility.

8. Label Everything

Labeling every bin, box, and shelf does not only make it easier for your child to find the toys they are looking for but also makes it easier for them to put them away.

You can use picture labels for younger kids who can’t read yet. It’s a simple step that can make a big difference.

9. Use Furniture with Built-in Storage

Furniture with built-in storage is a godsend for toy organization. Beds with drawers underneath, tables with storage compartments, or ottomans with storage space are great examples.

They are not only functional but also keep the toys out of sight and the room looking tidy.

10. Make Clean-up a Game

Making clean-up time a game can encourage your kids to put their toys away. You can set a timer and see who can clean up the fastest, or play a game of ‘basketball’ with a toy bin.

It’s a fun way to get your kids involved in keeping their toys organized.

11. Teach Your Kids to Respect Their Toys

Last but not least, teaching your kids to respect their toys is crucial. Explain to them that toys are not disposable, and they should take good care of them.

This will not only keep the toys in better condition but also foster a sense of responsibility in your kids.
